Gold/Silver FAQ l Gold/Silver Pokemon

Pokemon Gold/Silver is the sequel to the best-selling Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow. It was released back in late November in Japan and was an instant success. By September 15, 2000, this gem of a game will arrive on US shores!

The plot of the story is quite similar to that of the previous versions. You play as a young prodigy seeking to claim the title of "World's Greatest Pokemon Master". To do this, our hero must train and raise pokemon of all varieties, and travel across the world defeating Gym leaders and making it to the Pokemon League Competition. However, instead of the Pokemon League, you are trying to enter the Orange League. The path to this League is much tougher than the original. The map is twice as big as before. The pokemon are stronger and more elusive. And there is an interesting cast of characters that could encourage you or block the way to acheiving your goal.

But do not despair, for there are 100 new pokemon to help you on this long journey! This includes many "devolved" forms of your favorite pokemon, along with two brand new element-types: evil and steel! As an added feature, you can also become the world's greatest pokemon breeder. That's right! You can now breed your pokemon to create your own custom pokemon with their own unique blend of attacks! Sweet.

As for the characters... Well, our hero looks basically the same as Ash with a new wardrobe. Professor Oak remains unchanged. Your mother looks totally different, but behaves the same. As for new characters, your rival (who, I must say, strongly resembles a female) is different. Rather than being Prof. Oak's grandson, it is a new trainer who has stolen a pokemon from Oak's lab! Then there is also a new pokemon professor, and a rival of Oak's, Professor Utsugi (name likely to change for US version).

There are many other little fixes and changes as well. The graphics are WONDERFUL! Fantastic use of Game Boy Color mode. The pokedex has once again been completely redone. You can travel on a skateboard instead of a bike. You can use a cellphone to call other characters on. The game has an internal clock, too, which means only certain types of pokemon can be caught at day, and others at night. Your items menu has been altered, so it looks more like you are searching the pockets of your backpack. Finally, there are plenty of new Gyms to battle in and Badges to earn. Plus, there is one final amazing twist: after you beat the game, you take the SS Anne back to the old areas from Red/Blue/Yellow and earn MORE Badges! You'll even recognize some of the Gym Leaders from the past games, and see that a few Gyms have made changes since you were gone. And finally, when you're finished with that... you battle legendary pokemon master Ash Ketchum! Woohoo!
