Cold As Ice
“Now we set the oven to 350 degrees… and it’s
number 37, ‘Bright Star’, taking the lead… we’ll be back after these messages…
order today for three payments of $9.95… I am Iron Man… HE’S GOT A GUN!… this
looks like a well-bred Chansey worthy of first place in this year’s show…”
“Just
pick a channel already!” I said as I searched through the mini-bar of my hotel
room.
“Raichu!”
Raichu explained.
“Jolt!”
Jolteon added.
“Yeah,
whatever.”
“The
graceful Fearow dives down on the unsuspecting Rattata… HE’S GOT A GUN!… off
that the trial begins tomorrow. In
other news, a dead body has been discovered at the Huntley Lighthouse in the
Seafoam Islands. It has been identified
as that of Lynn Jones, a twenty-nine-year-old woman who had been hired to watch
the lighthouse for the last three weeks.”
I
grabbed a Sprite from the small fridge of my hotel room and walked over towards
the TV. Video clips were being shown of
a body bag being escorted outside of the lighthouse. “Stay on this channel,” I ordered.
“The
body was found severely beaten, but with little bloodshed of any kind, and
there were no bone fractures. The cause
of Jones death is yet to be discovered.
“Few
clues were left on the scene. The
window of the lighthouse had been shattered.
Police suspect that a pokemon was used in this foul play. There are no leads as of yet, but an
investigation continues.” Then
commercials interrupted the report.
I
thought about this information for a minute while sipping my Sprite. The pokemon used must’ve been able to
fly. But it also had to be able to beat
a person only slightly obviously, and yet effectively kill the person. Of course a bird pokemon wouldn’t be able to
do it. I had a pretty good idea of who
the suspect might be…
Hatred
burned inside of me for the vile creature, Mewtwo. Mewtwo had killed so many already… He had killed one of my mentors and friends, Amara. He killed my fellow trainer’s, Laura’s,
Marowak. He hurt me severely, and yet,
somehow, I managed to stay alive.
It’s
a long story. Mewtwo is a genetically
engineered pokemon created as a project by the Silph Co. years ago. He had been raised in isolation to do
nothing but become stronger and smarter.
He ended up killing many of his creators seeking revenge. But he was insane. He is free now and seeks new targets to kill, and more power to
kill with. And one of his supposed
targets was a legendary pokemon that lived in the Seafoam Islands.
I
immediately burst out of the hotel room and ran down the hallway to room
176. I banged harshly on the door. It opened and Laura stood there.
“What?”
she asked, wondering why I had caused so much commotion.
“Have
you been watching the TV here?!” I practically shouted at her.
“Yeah,
I know, there’s a bunch of crap on…” I
could hear the TV in her room spouting “HE’S GOT A GUN!”
“No!”
I shook my head. “On the news, they
said some lady was killed in a lighthouse in Seafoam!”
“So?”
Laura asked.
“It
was killed by a pokemon! And the
Seafoam Islands was one of Mewtwo’s suspected destinations!” I blurted out.
“And
what are we supposed to do it about?” Laura asked again, but I ignored her and
ran off down the hall. “H-hey! HEY! KAREN!” Laura yelled. She jumped out of the doorway and the door
closed. She began frantically banging
on it. “Blastoise! Open the door!”
I
went around and knocked on everyone else’s door, then ran off as if playing a
game of ding-dong-ditch. Eventually
everyone came out and we assembled a meeting in the downstairs lobby.
We
all sat in the chairs in the lobby around a small, glass table with an ashtray
in the center of it. There were five of
us there: Me, trying to explain what I had seen on the news, Laura, who acted
particularly confused as she often did, Jennifer, who fidgeted impatiently,
Ben, who remained silent and kept looking over his shoulder, and Daniel, who
listened quietly.
We
had been friends for quite a few years now.
We were all seventeen-years-old and had met back when we were about
thirteen. We traveled the world as
pokemon trainers looking for adventure, which we had found when we discovered
Mewtwo broke out of a master ball.
“…
And there were no signs that another human had done it. They believe it was a pokemon, and that
evidence sounds very much like Mewtwo,” I explained.
“Question: If Mewtwo is so smart, why would he leave
any clues at all?” Laura asked.
“Well,
he thinks we’ll make no difference. He
thinks he’s going to get all of the humans eventually,” Jennifer responded.
“What
are we supposed to do about it?” Ben asked.
“For
once, I agree with him,” Laura said, pointing at Ben.
“Look,
we go to Seafoam and try and dig up as much info on the murder as we can. Chances are Mewtwo is still there as well,
so we can look for him and try to cut him off-“
“If
he is there, wouldn’t he be looking around in the uninhabited regions, trying
to find Articuno or whatever?” Jennifer asked.
“I mean, what the hell is he doing at a lighthouse.”
There
was a brief pause. I shook my
head. “I don’t know,” I admitted. “But you know Mewtwo.
“Anyway,
Mewtwo probably did head for the Seafoam Cave.
That’s where Articuno is rumored to live. We might wanna go check it out.”
“Not
another cave…” Ben groaned.
“Yeah,
there’s probably even more Gyarados there!” Jennifer cried.
“Actually,
Gyarados can’t live in water that cold.
It gets freezing in there,” said Laura.
Did I mention she was an expert on water and ice pokemon?
“No
one cares, Laura,” I said. “Now let’s
get ready to go. Oh, and we might need
to go begging our parents for money again.”
I stood and walked off. My
pokemon were probably getting impatient, as I had promised earlier that I would
buy them lunch.
It
took a few days, but we organized our trip and took off to Seafoam by
plane. It was a nice little tropical
area where many people went for vacation, but we were there on business. Still, it was distracting. Especially to the others, but they had no
idea that I sought revenge on Mewtwo so much.
“Hey,
look!” Daniel pointed. My eyes fell in
the direction he pointed and spotted a large lighthouse on the rocky edge by
the sea. There was police tape
surrounding the area, and a police car.
Someone was inside investigating.
I approached the tape and the others followed. I looked around. No one
was paying attention to me. Good, I
thought, and slipped beneath the tape, then ran towards the entrance. All of a sudden, I felt my collar choke me.
“Hold
it!” came a female voice. She released
my collar. I turned around to see
police officer Jenny. In case you
didn’t know, there were eight police officers named Jenny who were all cousins
and sisters and looked exactly the same.
It was kind of scary.
“Where
do you think you’re going?” she demanded, crossing her arms.
“Um…
isn’t it obvious?” I asked.
“That
attitude is going to get you frisked,” she scolded. I laughed, but she didn’t, so I shut my mouth.
“Look,
officer, I’m here to check out Ms. Jones death,” I explained. This got a laugh out of her.
“Get
outta here, kid. You look like a high
schooler. Or a dropout. But either way, if you don’t leave I will
have to arrest you.”
“But
if I could just see the crime scene, I could confirm who killed her!” I blurted
out. Her face turned pale and looked
hard and long at me.
“Then
you should take it up at police headquarters.
They’ll discuss it with you,” she said in disbelief. I rolled my eyes and sauntered back to my
friends, who were waiting outside the tape.
“Jennies
are all alike,” Ben said. I raised my
eyebrow at him and ignored him.
“Now
what?” asked Jennifer.
“We
have to find some way to sneak in.”
“Why?”
“Because
I want to know about this. There has to
be some clue as to what he’s planning.
What does he want the legendary birds for? We still don’t know.” We
were all silent for a minute.
“Where
are those big ice caves you told us about, Karen?” asked Daniel.
“What? Um… I don’t know, I just know they’re
here. Somewhere.”
“Well
let’s find them and look for Mewtwo. Or
Articuno, whichever one we find first,” Laura said.
“That’s
stupid. We have no clue where they’d
be. I think it’s time we let someone in
on this,” Jennifer crossed her arms. I
shook my head.
“I
told you before, Team Rocket has their people everywhere. They’re among all those trainers we see in
town, at Silph, in the police force even.
Team Rocket wants Mewtwo bad and they’d do anything to find him
again.” I kicked a rock across the
ground.
“Oh,
come on!” Jennifer exploded, now
angry. “This isn’t our fight! You just want revenge!”
“What
the hell… There’s more to it than
that! Jennifer, you know Team Rocket
will find some way to enslave Mewtwo and use his powers. And if they don’t, Mewtwo well capture all
of the legendary birds and do who knows what!”
“I’m
going to the hotel,” Jennifer said dismissively. She turned and began to walk away. The others hesitated for a minute. They all looked at me, then Jennifer, then to each other. Then they began following Jennifer, looking
back at me as the walked off. I sighed
and rolled my eyes, then walked off in the opposite direction.
“AHHHHHHHHH! HE’S GOT A GUN!”
“Turn
it off already,” I said.
“Raichu,”
Raichu said, pointing his paw at the TV guide.
“It’s
not gonna come on!” I complained.
“Chu!”
he said stubbornly, nodding.
“BANG!”
“OH
MY GOD!” the TV screamed.
“Vuee!”
Eva cried, pulling her ears back flat against her head. “Vuee!”
“Raichu!”
Raichu laughed at her threat. Eva then
jumped up on the bed and flew straight into Raichu, using her quick
attack. Though small, she managed to
knock him off. The other pokemon
laughed.
I
rolled my eyes and grabbed the remote.
I turned the TV off and threw myself down on the bed. I had spent the rest of the day running all
over town looking for information on where Mewtwo had gone. As far as I know, Jennifer, Laura, Ben, and
Daniel had gone straight to our hotel and hung out. Some friends.
Revenge? Hell yeah, I wanted revenge. But Mewtwo was just plain dangerous and had
to be rid of. And Team Rocket was everywhere nowadays. We couldn’t tell anyone without risking
that. Team Rocket would easily
overpower everyone else. Sad, but true.
Please. Jennifer had no idea what she was talking
about.
“Vuee?”
Eva asked, jumping up on the bed, inquiring what was wrong.
“I’m
tired. Go to sleep,” I mumbled. Eva shrugged, a gesture she had adopted from
me, then went to the end of the bed and laid down. Eevee curled up nearby.
Soon the room fell silent.
I
stayed awake for quite some time. Tired
as I was, I still had trouble sleeping.
I tried all night to figure out what Mewtwo’s next move was, and whether
I’d have to go after him all by myself or not.
Eventually, however, I drifted off to sleep without knowing it.
Darkness. Utter silence.
Peace. Then, all of a sudden, a
voice. I looked around, but saw
nothing. Still, I continued to hear it
beckon. A calling. But nothing in sight. I thought for a moment, now afraid. Where was it coming from?
Then,
I realized I wasn’t really hearing it.
It wasn’t a noise, but rather a feeling that something was calling
me. All of a sudden, an explosion of
blinding light! I jumped to the ground
and closed my eyes.
I
leaped up. The room was dark, but the
window was still open as I had left it.
A dim pool of moonlight fell into the room and I could see my pokemon
scattered around, sleeping. Arcanine
kicked and whimpered occasionally, dreaming.
Raichu and Sandslash rested against him as if he were a pillow.
Gengar
was no where in sight, but that was typical.
He was, after all, a ghost.
Ditto was sitting in the small chair near the tiny table near the
window. Eva and Eevee were still at the
edge of the bed. Nidoqueen lay on the
other side of the bed. Jolteon was
there as well.
I
took a deep breath. Just a weird dream,
of which I had been having a lot lately.
I laid back down and stared at the ceiling for a few minutes. Then I felt as if I was being watched and
stood up.
That’s
when I saw it.
A golden,
shining orb hovered right outside the window.
I had seen it before, in a dream.
Or near-death experience. I
don’t know which. But there it was,
right outside my hotel room.
I
stared. It floated. I stood there for a few minutes, awestruck.
I shook
myself and dived to the balcony door, slid it open and jumped onto the balcony. The glowing ball gave a slight jump, as if
startled, then moved in closer.
“What are
you?” I asked as it floated directly in front of my face. The ball flashed, then flew closer to the
rim of the balcony. It stopped there
and waited. “What?” I asked and moved
closer. It moved out over the
edge. “Wait!” I cried, and stupidly
reached out my arms to grab the thing, wanting to know what it was. The object moved away and I fell over the
side.
“AHHHH!”
I cried as I hurtled from the eighth story of the hotel. The concrete ground rushed up and I knew in
a matter of seconds I would be splattered all over the ground. “AHHHH!”
Then, I
froze. I had stopped falling and was
hovering approximately six feet. I
looked around, wondering what had just happened. Then, very slowly, I drifted down and was gently placed feet
first on the ground. I looked up as the
little glowing orb floated down, gave me a quick glance, or what seemed like
one, and then zipped back into the sky and away from the city.
“Hey! Wait!
COME BACK!” I yelled, running into the street, but the thing ignored me
and went on flying away until it was out of sight. I watched as it disappeared and remained in the middle of the
road for a minute.
Then I
felt a hand fall on my shoulder.
Immediately
I whipped around and my knuckle collided with human flesh.
“Ow!” Ben
pulled back and held his face and began swearing in pain.
“Ben?!” I
cried. “What the hell are you doing out
here?!”
“Well, I
thought I heard you yelling about something!
What was that for?!” he exclaimed.
I
shrugged. “Reflex I guess.”
“What are
you doing out here?” he asked, still
rubbing his face.
“Um…
There was this… Aw, never mind. I just
thought I saw something.” I walked back
towards the hotel entrance, and realized it was locked and I didn’t have my
key. “Damn. Ben, do you have your key?”
“Yeah,”
he said. He took his card key out of
his pocket and unlocked it. I went in
and back up to my room, then tried once more to sleep. But I never could.
I was
still awake by the time the sun was up.
As soon as it did, I got dressed and grabbed my backpack. I ordered all of my pokemon to return to
their pokeballs and threw them roughly into the pack. As quietly as possible, I sneaked out of my room, downstairs to
the lobby, and out of the hotel.
There was
little traffic out on the road still.
Few people really lived here; most were just vacationing, so no one
really got up early around here. It
must’ve been about seven thirty and still the town seemed asleep and tranquil.
I went
across the road and behind the hotels and buildings there. Now I was at the small boardwalk near the
ocean. I passed right by and went down
across the beach shore. No one was out
swimming yet. I had anticipated that.
The beach
curved along the shore for quite a distance, but I never slowed my pace. I was going towards the direction the
glowing orb had disappeared. It was a
sign of some kind, I was sure of it. So
I continued on till the beach stopped abruptly at the foot of a hill, which
extended up to what could have been called a mountain, but I knew it wasn’t
that tall. We had driven from the
airport near this hill and I realized it wouldn’t take much to climb it. I would’ve gone up on Arcanine, but chances
were he was still asleep.
Up the
really tall hill/short mountain I climbed.
I was tired out by the time I got to the mouth of a cave, but nothing I
couldn’t quickly recover from. I
decided the cave would be a good place to start and so I took out my flashlight
and clicked it on. I shined it around
and saw nothing, and entered the cave.
I was
immediately hit by cold air. The
temperature inside was a lot lower than that outside and I wished I had brought
a jacket. As soon as I got in quite a
ways, I discovered that the interior was partially encased in ice. For the first time in my life, I wished I
had an ice pokemon. It would be able to
help me check out the area without freezing to death.
I
traveled through the winding caves for about an hour before discovering
anything. Then I saw light at the end
of the cave. I moved in closer and
realized that there was an opening. I
walked out and looked around. Now I
stood at the very top of the mountain.
There was a waterfall up here and some ice remained on the ground. I looked down at the water as it flowed over
the edge and imagined how cold it must’ve been. I leaped across to the other side and looked around once
more. Another cave entrance. It seemed almost as if the series of caves
were man-made.
I
sighed. What the hell was I looking for
now? What did the glowing orb
want? I wanted to find out badly, but I
had no idea where to look. The caves
seemed empty.
I reached
into my backpack and pulled out a pokeball.
“C’mon, Arcanine,” I said.
Arcanine shot out of the pokeball and scratched his ear with his massive
back paw. “I need your help boy.”
“Growr…?”
he asked sleepily and yawned, then blinked a few times.
“I know
you’re tired, but this could be important.
I’m going in this cave and I just need you to sniff around for anything
unusual. Can you do that?” He yawned again, then lay down and curled
himself up. “Wake up!” He ignored me,
naturally. Arcanine was always like
that. “Geez…” I returned him to his
pokeball then brought out a different one.
“Joltz, did you hear that?” I asked, releasing him from his pokeball.
“Jolt,”
he said, nodding.
“Good. Let’s go in.” Jolteon still looked tired, but he obeyed. We walked into the cave side by side. Once again, it was cold and dark. I used my flashlight still and we wandered
through the twisting cave. We spent
quite some time in the tunnel. Then,
Jolteon perked him ears up and stuck his nose into the air.
“Eon,” he
said.
“What?” I
asked. He began darting away, nose
still in the air. I assumed he was
following some sort of scent trail and ran after him. “What’s up?,” I asked.
“Jolt!”
he shouted and continued to run on. I
kept after him. Then all of a sudden he
disappeared and I felt myself falling.
I was running too fast to realize the flashlight revealed the end of a
ledge.
It felt
like Deja vu.
“Ahhhhhh!”
“Joooolt!”
I took
action and swiftly grabbed a pokeball, throwing it below me. “ARCANINE!”
I didn’t see where he was, as I had let go of the flashlight when I
began falling, and it was falling slower.
Then I felt my innards slosh as I hit something soft and warm. I felt Jolteon land beside me. My flashlight bounced off of Arcanine’s
head. I took a deep breath, neglecting
to do so as I fell.
“GrrrrrUFF!”
Arcanine snarled fiercely at us as we climbed off his back.
“Heh. Sorry,” I replied. I grabbed my flashlight and turned to Jolteon. “You okay?”
“Jolt!”
he confirmed.
“Good.” I shined the flashlight around. “Looks like Ditto has to get us out.” I looked around once more. “God, it’s freezing down here.” Then I realized that the cave went on. There was another “hall” leading further
away. “Wait, let’s go down there.”
“GROWR!”
“Quit
whining. I saw something fly over to
this cave last night and I want to figure out what it was. It’s important.”
“Jolt
jolteon?” Jolteon asked.
“I just
think there might be something significant here,” I said, starting to walk
deeper into the tunnel. Jolteon and
Arcanine reluctantly followed, grumbling all the way. At one point in time, Arcanine stuck his nose up in alarm.
“What?” I
asked.
“Gruff.” He sniffed the air again looked around. Jolteon did the same and seemed to sense
something too.
“Jolt
jolt!” he said and dashed away. I ran
after him. Perhaps he had picked up the
smell we he had been tracking earlier.
All of a
sudden we slid to a halt as the corridor ended and formed a sort of room,
circular in shape. In the center was
what looked like a bird’s nest, but enlarged.
I practically filled the whole room.
It was formed of carefully placed, dead tree branches and tall grasses. And packed into the nest was a sparkling
silver egg nearly three feet long.
“Whoa!”
“Jolteon?! Jolt!” Jolteon spouted nervously.
I moved
closer and realized that my flashlight wasn’t needed. Up far above was a crack in the rock that sunlight poured through
and onto the nest. Of course: it was a
place to keep the egg warm. “What is
this?” I whispered.
Arcanine
sniffed the air once more, then leaped.
“GRUFF!” he cried.
“What
now?!”
“GRUFF!”
he dived and scooped Jolteon and me onto his back, then began running.
“What is
it?!” I kept shouting, but he ignored me.
I punched his shoulder and he turned his head trying to scold me.
“KREEEEEEE!”
came a sudden screech, like that of a bird, but intensified. The mother.
I felt a blast of cold wind as if something flew by at high speed. I caught a glimpse of light, almost like
stars, as it breezed by.
“RUN!” I
yelled. “RUN, DAMMIT, RUN!”
“Growr-OOOOOOOOO!”
Arcanine howled as he sped up. He
dodged just as the large creatures flew past again, avoiding it. The beast must’ve been too large for him to
fight off. Our only chance was to run.
Again it
swept past. But this time, I felt it
swiftly knock its talons into my ribs.
“AHHHH!” I fell off and hit the
ground. I heard Arcanine’s paws rush
forward. Did he even know I had fallen
off? I leapt to my feet, even though my
ribs hurt badly.
“KREEEEEEEEEEEEEE!” I covered my ears as the creature let loose
its deafening screech. Then I felt
another gust of wind from its wings. It
landed directly in front of me, its giant talons digging into the ground. I jumped backward, abruptly stopping as I
hit the wall.
FWOOSH! BAM!
It
happened in the blink of an eye. A
huge, gaping bird’s beak appeared in front of me. I screamed and dived to the floor, but the beak jerked back just
as quickly. I heard a “whoosh” noise
and heard the giant bird slam against something.
I found
this a most opportune time to reach for my flashlight. Now I could see the creature a bit more
clearly. A hooked gray beak with two
bright red eyes above it made up the face.
A crest of blue feathers arose from its round head. The underside was covered with solid white
feathers. Its wings were massive and a
pale sky blue, like the rest of it, with extra long, elaborate tail feathers
wrapped around it.
Articuno.
It was
bigger than I imagined. The pokemon
must’ve been over twenty feet tall. It
lay still against the ground. I
cautiously edged closer to it. What had
hit it? There didn’t seem to be a mark
left on its body.
Unless…
I heard
something drop nearby. Then, out of no
where, a rather large pokeball flew at Articuno. A beam of light shot out of it, enveloping Articuno, sucking it
inside the machine and closing.
Articuno didn’t struggle at all to release itself.
I looked
up at the direction where the ball had come from and shined my flashlight up
toward the ceiling. It was just as I
had suspected.
“You!”
“Hmph. You are alive.” Mewtwo hovered up above, showing no hint of surprise on his
face. He glared down at the pokeball. His eyes glowed and it began rising towards
him. He caught it as it came and held
it, then looked back to me.
“Let it
go, bastard!” I shouted angrily. Mewtwo
merely grinned menacingly back.
“I knew
you would come back.” He continued, plainly.
“Never thought that you would come after me again.”
“Huh?”
Mewtwo
waved dismissively. “You are no threat
to me.” Then turned his hand in my
direction, narrowed his eyes and created a small sphere of psychic energy. In the blink of an eye, it flew towards
me. I dived to the ground just as it
rocketed into the wall behind me.
Mewtwo landed directly in front of me.
“You are quite strong for a human.
I applaud you.” Then he turned
and began walking down the tunnel, swishing his tail from side to side.
“Hey! We’re not finished!” I struggled to get on my feet again. My ribs still ached from Articuno’s attack
and I was a bit shaken by the last blast.
Mewtwo stopped in his tracks, but still didn’t turn to face me.
“You do
not know your limitations, human. Your
ignorance will be your downfall.”
“Go,
everyone!” I juggled with the pokeballs
in my backpack. Eva, Eevee, Ditto,
Nidoqueen, Sandslash, Raichu, and Gengar appeared between us, all looking
particularly surprised to see Mewtwo.
“Vuee?!”
Eva cried to me.
“Gengar!”
I said. He didn’t wait for an
order. He flew at Mewtwo with a
nightshade attack. Mewtwo stepped
aside, but Gengar doubled back trying to hypnotize him. All of my other pokemon joined in so it was
difficult to see what was going on. Eva
had clamped down on Mewtwo’s arm with her teeth while Eevee kicked up a
sand-attack. Sandslash and Nidoqueen
were a bit shaky from the cold, but moved in to help. Ditto transformed into Ben’s Beedrill and dive-bombed him. Raichu dived on him and disappeared in the
crowd.
FWOOSH!
My
pokemon went flying in all directions.
Mewtwo’s eyes glowed a pale blue color as he encased his body in a blue
orb of energy. He was creating a
barrier to shield himself.
“Wonderful. I have been able to increase my powers. I have been practicing, you know.” A malicious smile spread across his face.
“That’s
why you killed Lynn Jones?!” I exploded.
He nodded and laughed.
“I
understand this will not be our last meeting, human. But let it come. I will
not lose the final battle.” With that,
he continued down the tunnel until I could no longer see him. I stood there for about a minute,
considering what he had said.
“Vuee…”
I turned
to see where Eva was laying. She had
hurt her front right ankle, but it wasn’t a serious wound. “Looks like you need to stay off your feet
for a few days,” I said and picked her up.
“Everyone okay?” I called. My
pokemon replied in a chorus of whines.
I called Nidoqueen and Sandslash back into their pokeballs so that the
cold didn’t further injure them. Ditto
demorphed from his Beedrill form and was fine, as usual. Raichu had a large scratch on his arm from
hitting a rock and it bled lightly, but again, nothing serious. Gengar was woozy from the attack, being a
poison pokemon, so I called him back as well.
Finally, Eevee had some cuts and scratches, so I sprayed a potion on
him.
It wasn’t
long after I had finished tending everyone’s wounds that Arcanine and Jolteon
appeared out of nowhere, and they had brought Laura, Jennifer, Ben, and Daniel
with them.
“Jolteon was
frantic. What happened?” Laura asked.
“Long
story.”
“Why the
hell did you come down here without telling us?!” Jennifer yelled.
“I
thought you didn’t care about this fight,” I said smoothly.
She
rolled her eyes. “Yeah, well, it was
pretty stupid of you to come down here.
What happened?”
“Mewtwo
captured Articuno.”
“WHAT?!”
they all cried in surprise.
“Yeah,
but I think he missed something. Come
here.” I lead them down the back
tunnel, where the giant bird nest lay, warming up in the sunlight that poured
from the crack in the ceiling. “I’m
guessing this is its egg,” I said.
“If this
is Articuno’s egg, then it must have a mate,” Ben pointed out. “But I thought there was only one Articuno
anyway.”
“Um…
Well, I only saw one. But there’s
something big in this egg and the Articuno was trying to protect it.”
“What are
we supposed to do with it?” Laura asked.
“Keep
Mewtwo from finding it,” Jennifer said.
“Does
that mean you guys are back on the mission?” I asked hopefully.
“Hell
yeah!”
“Cool.”
We spent
the rest of the day covering up the egg so that it was perfectly warm and
hidden well beneath the branches. We
decided to leave the egg alone afterward and returned to the hotel. Now all we had to wonder about was where
Mewtwo would strike next. Zapdos and
Moltres could be anywhere.
“OH MY
GOD! HE’S GOT A GUN!”
“AHHHHHH!”
BANG!
“YOU
SAVED US!”
“Give me
the popcorn,” I said. Raichu handed me
the bowl and I ate some. We were
watching some lame movie on television in the hotel room. I grabbed the remote and turned it off. “I’m tired.
Go to sleep.”
Raichu
jumped off the edge of the bed and curled up in a nearby chair. All of the other pokemon found a spot to
sleep on the floor. I flipped off the
lamp on the nightstand and lay down.
It was
shortly after that, when all I could hear was the soft breathing of my pokemon
sound asleep, that I happened to notice a light outside on the balcony. I quietly got up and opened the sliding
door. I almost jumped off the
balcony. The small glowing orb had
startled me once again.
It
hovered up to my face and stayed there for a moment. Then it floated over to the rim of the balcony and rested
there. I could’ve sworn it was looking
up at the stars.
“Look,
whatever you are… thanks.”
You’re
welcome.
